ÖBB: Not Taking Risks...

RAILWAY SAFETY: STOP SELFIES ON THE TRACKS

In 2022, there were 15 near misses in Austria due to dangerous selfies along train tracks. For this reason, ÖBB is drawing attention to the dangers with a new campaign.

In just one year, there were 15 near misses on tracks owned by ÖBB, which means a train could have reached the person before they were able to get out of its path. This number is not the result of inattention on the part of train operators. Rather, the cause is a highly dangerous trend: taking selfies along and on train tracks.

That's why the railway company is now launching a new campaign under the motto "Not taking risks: Stop selfies on the tracks!" and wants to make all people aware of the dangers. Because even a brief lapse of attention can have fatal consequences.

Selfies on or near the tracks are a danger not only to the individual but to the train operator as well. Machinists often can't see obstacles on the tracks in time, and braking is no longer possible, especially at high speeds.

  • Every year in Europe, about 400 persons die on rail networks.
  • One third of all deaths at rail systems is caused by suicide or other intentional acts.
  • One person dies every other day on EU railways
  • The number of suicides on railway networks has risen over the years.

The Federal Railways Board therefore appeals urgently to everyone to be careful and to stay off the rails. Because a single thoughtless action can have fatal consequences for many.
