Austin Wells' Two-Homer Night Powers Yankees Past Cardinals
Wells Delivers Explosive Performance
On a cold Monday at Yankee Stadium, rookie catcher Austin Wells belted two home runs to propel the New York Yankees to a 6-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.
Wells' first homer, a solo shot in the second inning, gave the Yankees an early 1-0 lead. His second homer, a two-run blast in the fifth inning, gave New York a 5-1 cushion.
Yankees Overcome Cardinals' Rally
The Cardinals attempted a comeback by scoring three runs in the sixth inning, including a solo homer by Paul Goldschmidt. However, the Yankees' bullpen held strong, allowing only one more run in the seventh.
Nestor Cortes pitched 5.2 innings for the Yankees, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks. He struck out six Cardinals.
Wells Continues Impressive Rookie Season
Wells, a 23-year-old from Las Vegas, is enjoying a breakout rookie season with the Yankees. He is now batting .308 with 16 home runs and 55 RBIs in 74 games.
The Yankees are now 62-33 this season and hold a 10-game lead in the American League East. The Cardinals, who still lead the National League Central by six games, fell to 56-42.
