High-Risk Pregnancies May Benefit from New Treatment

A new study suggests that a monoclonal antibody called nipocalimab may be able to postpone or prevent intrauterine transfusions in pregnancies at high risk for early-onset severe hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN).
HDFN is a rare but serious condition that occurs when the mother's immune system attacks the fetus's red blood cells. This can lead to anemia, jaundice, and other complications. In severe cases, HDFN can be fatal.
The current standard of care for HDFN is intrauterine transfusions. These transfusions can be life-saving, but they are also invasive and carry a risk of complications.
The new study, published in the journal Blood, found that nipocalimab was able to postpone or prevent intrauterine transfusions in 7 of 13 pregnancies (54%). This is a significant finding, as it suggests that nipocalimab could be a new treatment option for HDFN.
